What your gift makes possible

When one woman thrives, the impact can reach far beyond her own family.

Alifonsina Mkonde joined MicroLoan Foundation in 2012, and started selling tomatoes from a simple stall. Over time, she expanded into groceries and, by 2018, she had built a maize mill in the centre of her community. Today, the mill is a hub of local economic activity, providing employment for eight people and supporting their families too.

But Alifonsina’s success has never been just about building a business. With a more secure income, her family no longer faces hunger. She’s built a larger home and, determined to give her children opportunities she never had, has funded university education for three of them. Her eldest son now works alongside her, helping to run the mill.

Alifonsina’s ambition continues to grow. She plans to build a warehouse and invest in a larger vehicle so she can expand her business and reach bigger buyers. Her story demonstrates what can happen when women have access to finance, training and the opportunity to build their own businesses.

How do I leave a gift in my Will?

If you’d like to leave a gift in your Will to ensure that your values live on, all it takes is a conversation with your Wills lawyer.

Can I decide how I would like my gift to be used?

If you choose to tell us about your plans, we can welcome you as a special member of the valued MicroLoan community. We would love to chat over a cup of coffee about how your gift will be spent – your wishes are of utmost importance to us. ‘Unrestricted gifts’ (i.e. gifts you give us permission to use in ways we deem to make the biggest difference) are the most valuable to us, as we can direct these gifts towards our most urgent needs. If you’d rather, you can also leave a gift in your Will to a specific area of our work such as Malawi or training. What type of gift can I leave?

We are immeasurably grateful for each and every gift we receive. There are three main types of gift you can leave to us:

  • A residuary legacy is a percentage of whatever is left over from an estate after debts, funeral expenses, administration costs, and all other gifts have been paid. This can be any percentage you like. Many people choose this type of gift as it ensures their loved ones are taken care of first.
  • A pecuniary legacy is a fixed sum of money; as big or small as you like. When it comes to helping vulnerable families to help themselves, every gift counts.
  • A specific legacy is the gift of a particular asset, such as stocks or property.

What is Inheritance Tax?

A person is eligible to pay Inheritance Tax if their estate is worth more than £325,000 when they die. This is called the ‘Inheritance Tax threshold’. However, most gifts to charity in Wills aren’t subject to Inheritance Tax.

I've already written my Will, can I amend it to include MicroLoan Foundation?

Yes, you can ask your solicitor to make amendments to your Will at any time.

Depending on the extent of the changes you would like to make to your existing Will, it might be possible for you to use a codicil to make your amendments.

Do I have to pay tax on gifts left to charity?

No, gifts left to charity in your Will are tax-free.

Do I have to leave a large amount?

We understand and respect that you need to provide for your family and friends first. We are incredibly grateful for any financial gift, even a small donation can make a huge difference for women facing poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.

To give you an idea of the impact your gift could make, just £25 would provide a woman with a start-up loan, £550 would provide business training for 100 women, and £4,700 would fund TWO Loan & Training Officers, providing support for 600 women.
