Margaret’s Story: From surviving to thriving

When we first met Margaret in 2017, life was far from easy. With few job opportunities in her community, she and her husband struggled to make ends meet. Sending their children to school was a constant challenge, and the dream of owning their own home felt out of reach.

That same year, Margaret joined MicroLoan Foundation and took her first small loan. With determination and teamwork, she and her husband used the funds to grow and diversify their poultry business. Bit by bit, their hard work began to pay off.

The video below is from 2018, when we caught up with Margaret and her husband to hear how they were getting on.

Success against the odds

When we met them in 2018, Margaret’s business was growing, they could afford school fees and start saving for their future. They were living with Margaret’s in-laws, but dreamt of the day they could build a home of their own.

In 2024, drought hit Zimbabwe hard, and Margaret’s family, like many others, faced immense hardship. “It was a real hand-to-mouth existence for my family,” says Margaret. “But this growing season has been much better, and we are now back.”

Through MicroLoan’s business training and mentoring, Margaret learned to see her chickens not just as food for the table but as valuable business assets. She diversified her income by growing tomatoes and maize and even added a pig to her smallholding.

A family’s life transformed

When we visited her again in Spring 2025, the transformation was remarkable. Margaret had achieved her dream: she and her family had built their own four-room house, one of the largest in the village. Two rooms are already complete, and the family has moved in while finishing touches continue.

Today, Margaret manages a thriving business with multiple income streams. Her children never miss school, and the family enjoys a healthier, more balanced diet than ever before.

A future filled with hope

Just like her business, Margaret’s ambitions continue to grow. Next she hopes to install a borehole and electricity in their new home, and ensure her children can access tertiary education.

“I have been with MicroLoan Foundation for a long time now,” she says proudly.
“It’s good to see women in the community uplifting themselves through business and having better lives.”
