Fundraising research volunteer 

MicroLoan Foundation is looking for a long-term volunteer who is passionate and determined to make a difference. This volunteer position will provide an invaluable opportunity to gain essential skills and experience in key aspects of fundraising for an international development organisation. The role is focused on prospect research of grant-making organisations.

MicroLoan’s Head Office is located 5 minutes from Southwark and Waterloo stations in central London. The Fundraising Research volunteer will be part of the Fundraising and Communications team with an annual income target of £1million. This is an opportunity for a proactive and friendly self-starter to play an important supporting role in the organisation. Your working hours are flexible, and you can work from home or at our offices. We do ask for a minimum time commitment of 8 hours a week, ideally for several months.

MicroLoan Foundation provides poor women living in remote rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa with free financial literacy and business training in combination with small affordable loans. Our support has helped these women to develop small businesses, such as selling produce, trading fish, or running a grocery store. With the income and savings generated by these businesses, they are able to provide for the daily needs of their families, save for larger household purchases, and increase their resilience against adversity. Since 2002 MicroLoan Foundation has supported over 240,000 women and an estimated 960,000 children in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The role:

This is a role for an organised and target-driven self-starter. Working in a small fundraising team you will be helping to replenish the pipeline of prospective grant-giving trusts and foundations. You will achieve this by researching prospects from monthly lists of newly registered trusts. Should the individual show the desire and aptitude, they can receive further training on how to write proposals, ensuring any applications made are appropriate and speaks to the values of the potential donor.


  • Review details of registered trusts and foundations in the UK
  • Review details of trusts and foundations registered in the USA
  • Identify suitable prospective new grant-giving trusts and foundations for funding approaches against a set of key criteria
  • Extract and capture key information to inform cultivation and application strategies
  • Provide support for the preparation of funding proposals

Knowledge, skills and experience required:

  • Strong research skills with an ability to present information clearly and concisely
  • Excellent attention to detail and a pro-active approach
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Has the ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and the ability to prioritise and use own initiative
  • Excellent MS Office skills including Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • An active interest in fundraising and international development
  • Fundraising experience an advantage, though not a requirement
