A different approach to charity

Our Vision for the Future

Muhammad Yunus once said, "we have created a society that does not allow opportunities for (the poorest) to take care of themselves because we have denied them those opportunities."

"we have created a society that does not allow opportunities for (the poorest) to take care of themselves because we have denied them those opportunities."

MicroLoan is working to give these people the working chance they need.

Our vision is to help millions of people help themselves out of poverty by providing them with the opportunity to start small, self-sustainable businesses.

Currently we have an established network of 21 branches in Malawi supported by over 160 local staff. Having built up a successful first operation there, we have started to develop the model in neighbouring sub-Saharan countries. In May 2009 we made our first loan in Zambia, where we now have three branches.

MicroLoan values the impact that a small amount of money can have on the lives of the poor. We believe in starting small, small steps lead to big change.

How it Works

We provide a loan with education and mentoring to our female entrepreneurs. When they repay, we recycle the money to help thousands more women.

Success Stories

  • Malawi's Solar Women

With just 8% of Malawians connected to a national grid and even that becoming increasingly unreliable of late, MicroLoan has been developing some new business opportunities for the women we help to benefit from solar energy.
