MicroLoan Foundation features on BBC Radio 4 PM
The
MicroLoan Foundation has been profiled on BBC Radio 4's PM programme.
In a broadcast looking at the popularity of microfinance, journalist
Nils Blythe focuses on the impact that small business loans have had on
the lives of MicroLoan's clients and their families in Malawi.
Having spent time with MicroLoan staff and clients, Blythe looks at the
charity's historic repayment rate of 98% as well as profiling a client who received a £12 loan to set up a fritter stall (Margaret Chunga, pictured). Martha Nkhoma, Operations Manager in Malawi, identifies "good training and support as vital for successful lending." She goes on to say that "the key thing, if you are working with people who need to borrow money, is that you understand their ability to repay." The broadcast presents an alternative to the 'high finance' that has caused such economic devastation in the western world but also offers a reminder that the ability to borrow - when done in the right way - is a crucial part of economic development.
