A different approach to charity

We provide an opportunity to the most destitute.  We focus on lending to the poorest of the poor in rural areas and so we do not require collateral.  Because villages are often remote, difficult to reach and without public transport services, we go to the clients.

Our microfinance model is flexible in a way that recognises our clients’ progress and performance.  Clients that show a flare for business are able to get larger loans to help their businesses grow.  We also adapt our approach from country to country according to the local environment and culture.

We believe in embracing the culture of the local community, not disrupting it.  Getting the village headman involved in the process of forming a loan group helps to endorse the programme, giving it a legitimacy amongst the community.

We believe that education and training is vital to our clients’ success in helping them and their families to build sustainable livelihoods.  We are committed to providing business and skills training to all those we lend to throughout the loan cycle.

We encourage our clients to be active decision-makers. Our clients control the meetings, count and make repayments as well as solve problems within the group.  This enables them to become independent, learn basic financial skills, and work together to support one another.

We are committed to employing local Africans at all management levels.  Their knowledge of local culture, customs and language is invaluable to the charity’s success.  It is also a vital source of employment in countries where opportunities are few and far between, and helps our focus on long-term sustainability.
